What to ask yourself when shopping for insurance?

Insurance – admittedly not the most exciting part of being a physio. Dull as it may be, it is one of your most important assets as a practitioner.

Did you know that professional indemnity insurance is a requirement of your registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)? This insurance serves to protect you from the costs and reputational damage caused by potential claims made against you as a practicing individual, so it’s pretty important.

While the intention behind different insurance policies may be the same, the offering of each policy can be vastly different – and so can the cost. Your needs as a physiotherapist may also change as your career progresses. That’s why it’s a good idea to review your policy at the time of renewal to ensure you have the right cover to meet your current needs.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself before committing to a policy. This way, you can easily make sure you get the cover that best meets your requirements:

  1. Is this policy designed for my profession?
  2. Are there flexible payment options such as pay by the month?
  3. Is vicarious, public and product liability included in the policy or can these be added?
  4. Are alternative therapies such as dry needling covered under the policy?
  5. Does the insurer offer risk management resources?

There are plenty of insurers out there who specialise in professional indemnity insurance. To see a comprehensive list of insurers and find one that suits you, visit the Physio Hub Insurance page.
