All physiotherapists practising in Australia are legally required to have in place Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII). Physiotherapists are required to make a declaration upon registration renewal that they will not practise without appropriate PII.  They must also declare that they have not practised without PII during the previous registration period.

The guidelines for PII can be accessed through The Physiotherapy Board of Australia – Codes and Guidelines Section.

The Physiotherapy Board states that it is the responsibility of the individual to consult with the insurance provider in order to assess the risks involved in practice, and to specify a level of cover appropriate to those risks.  Cover is required not only for current practice, but also for any future claims that may arise regardless of employment status at the time (run-off cover).

Many insurers now offer physiotherapy specific PII.  Whilst the list below is not exhaustive, it does provide a number of options for obtaining PII.  No specific insurers or products are recommended by The Physiotherapy Board or Physio Hub.  We advise that physiotherapists closely review each individual policy to ensure they have suitable coverage to meet the Physiotherapy Board requirements.
